Spider-Man Reboot New Actor Casting News: Tom Holland Lands MCU Role as Peter Parker with Director Jon Watts

After months and months of speculation, casting rumors and leaked short lists, we can now confirm the new actor and director of the upcoming Spider-Man solo movie for Marvel and Sony. According to the comic book film studio, Tom Holland has officially been cast as the new Peter Parker with director Jon Watts hired to helm the 2017 MCU standalone film. Holland will first appear as the superhero in Captain America: Civil War in a cameo. Read more on this news below!

After cutting down the actors short list to three once rumored frontrunner Asa Butterfield was dropped from contention earlier this month, Holland beat out Charlie Plummer and Matthew Lintz this week, thus ending the long list of rumors for now (via Marvel).

Holland was officially cast after a series of screen tests impressed Marvel and Sony executives, making him "the perfect actor to bring Spider-Man's story into the Marvel Cinematic Universe," according to Sony's Amy Pascal (via IGN)

Meanwhile, Watts beat out a number of rumored directors for the coveted job, which is a huge step forward for the studios' joint venture project. Watts

"As with James Gunn, Joss Whedon, and the Russo brothers, we love finding new and exciting voices to bring these characters to life," Marvel's Kevin Feige said in a statement this week, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "We spent a lot of time with Jon and find his take and work inspiring."
