Fans of the Marvel Comic Books superhero Black Panther were pretty excited to learn that Selma director Ava DuVernay was approached to take on the role of director in the highly anticipated movie adaptation of the character. Unfortunately, news of DuVernay's turning down the project has already spread faster than any casting rumors, so we won't get to see how the filmmaker would handle one of Marvel Cinematic Universe's movies just yet. Recently, the acclaimed director addressed this news and explained why she didn't want to helm Black Panther. Read more on this news below.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter recently, the director spoke at length about her decision to back away from the project after initially wanting to sign on.

Basically, DuVernay was pretty into the idea of working with Marvel because her work would reach audiences all over the world, more so than films she makes, according to her. That's clearly a draw, but a huge setback is that she felt she would have to compromise in order to work within the MCU. Ultimately, she decided she didn't want to struggle with this project and left.

"These Marvel films go everywhere from Shanghai to Uganda, and nothing that I probably will make will reach that many people, so I found value in that. That's how the conversations continued, because that's what I was interested in. But everyone's interested in different things. What my name is on means something to me - these are my children," the filmmaker explained, according to Slash Film. "This is my art. This is what will live on after I'm gone. So it's important to me that that be true to who I was in this moment. And if there's too much compromise, it really wasn't going to be an Ava DuVernay film."
