Thierry Henry, legendary Arsenal and France striker, is retiring. The World Cup-winning superstar left the New York Red Bulls after they were knocked out of MLS playoff contention earlier this month, which prompted speculation Arsenal's all-time leading goal scorer would return to the London club for the Premier League season. In his career filled with accolades, he won the Champions League, La Liga and Copa del Rey with Barcelona (2009), the Premier League twice and the FA Cup three times with Arsenal, and also took home a FIFA World Cup (1998) and Euro championship (2000) representing France. "I would love to fight Manny Pacquiao," Mayweather told Showtime. "We tried to make it the fight happen years ago; we had problems with random blood and urine testing. Johnny Manziel's first start as an NFL quarterback was a "disaster", with the QB himself calling it a "fail". The Cleveland Browns lost 30-0 to AFC North division rival Cincinnati Bengals in Manziel's debut start, with the former Texas A&M QB looking "sloppy" and "slow" in the shut out loss. Manziel — drafted 16th overall by the Browns in the 2014 NFL draft — threw two interceptions and was sacked three times, and essentially eliminated the Browns from NFL playoff contention in the process. Unsurprisingly, the reactions around the NFL to the loss were — similar to everything else Manziel-related — loud and brash. Read More »
Is Carmelo Anthony trying to force his way out of New York with a trade? With reports surfacing that the Knicks star was willing to waive the no-trade clause in his mammoth five year, $124 million contract he signed in the off season, rumors are still swirling whether Carmelo will want to stay long term while the team is in disarray. With the 5-21 Knicks struggling, and Melo dealing with a knee complaint, reports say the team could feasibly look at shutting down Carmelo. Kobe Bryant passed Michael Jordan in all-time NBA scoring as the Lakers beat the Timberwolves 100-94 on Sunday. With the L.A. Lakers superstar needing nine points to surpass the Chicago Bulls legend, it took two free throws - courtesy of a Zach LaVine foul - to put the Lakers shooting guard into third spot on the all-time points leaders for the NBA. With it came an avalanche of tributes from Magic Johnson, Snoop Dog, LeBron James, Arsenio Hall and, fittingly, from Michael Jordan himself. Read More »
The NFL has been without a Los Angeles team since 1994, when the Raiders and Rams moved to Oakland and St. Louis. And it seems like rumors of a team returning to the City of Angels have existed ever since those squads left. For now, the city is still left waiting and wishing. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell told "The New York Times" that a move to Los Angeles is still unlikely to happen all the way in the future of 2015. Meaning fans in SoCal will have to wait at least another year. "I'm not at the point where I would tell you that anything is imminent or that we have a solution identified at this point in time," Goodell told the Times. "There is progress, but we've all heard that before." The most likely teams to move to L.A. one day are the San Diego Chargers, Raiders or Rams, according to "Sports Illustrated." That's because all three can wiggle out of stadium leases next year, giving them flexibility to uproot. Real estate mogul Stan Kroenke, who owns the Rams, owns property in Los Angeles large enough for a stadium to be built. The Rams are also peeved about not being able to agree with their lender for plans to renovate the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, according to "Sports Illustrated." Read More »
"I don't care if New England doesn't lose again," Knighton told the Post. "I don't care where we have to play. I don't care who our opponent is. We're not going to be satisfied until we hoist that trophy. So if we've got to go to New England and win somewhere we're not used to winning, we're going to make it happen." Knighton has a reason to be confident, as the Broncos can obviously win even when quarterback Peyton Manning isn't at his best. Manning was dealing with a stomach flu, according to ESPN. He still tossed for 233 yards and led the Broncos to their third division title in his three years with the team. Read More »
Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant needed just nine points Sunday, Dec. 14, to etch his name above Michael Jordan's on the NBA all-time scoring list. It took him less than two quarters. Bryant tied and then passed Jordan with two free throws with 5:24 left before halftime while the Lakers were taking on the Minnesota Timberwolves in Minnesota. Pro-Timberwolves and pro-Jordan fans jeered from the crowd as Bryant warmed up on the line. Some people just don't like to see history surpassed, and all the Bryant vs. Jordan debate that raged this week couldn't have sat well with the purists. But the Timberwolves themselves were more gracious hosts, stopping the game to congratulate Bryant individually after his record-setting free throws. Bryant now sits behind only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (38,387) and Karl Malone (36,928) on the all-time list. Read More »
