The Detroit Pistons have waived Josh Smith, with $26 million still remaining on the contract star forward signed with the NBA team last year (which the Pistons still have to pay). Pistons Head Coach and President of Basketball Operations Stan Van Gundy told Smith the news this morning in a meeting, and early indications are that the L.A. Clippers, Houston Rockets, Sacramento Kings and Dallas Mavericks are interested in picking up the 6 ' 9" combo forward. Even it's a move to free up space for star center Andre Drummond, power forward Greg Monroe, similarly under-performing point guard Brandon Jennings and second-year guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, simply waiving Smith a remarkable move. Game of Thrones creator and author George RR Martin has offered to screen the James Franco and Seth Rogen comedy The Interview, and in the process blasted the "corporate cowardice" displayed by Sony for bowing to North Korean hackers wishes by not showing the movie (which centers around a CIA Kim Jong-Un assassination plot). Michael Phelps has pled guilty to his second DUI charge stemming from the Olympic swimming champion's Sep. 30 Maryland arrest for driving with a blood alcohol content nearly double the legal limit, after being clocked driving 84 mph in a 45 mph zone.The 18-time Olympic gold medallist was given a one-year suspended sentence that will involve a 18-month supervised probation and a two month suspension of his driving license. His close friend and 'long-time' mentor, former Baltimore Raven linebacker Ray Lewis, was in court to support Phelps. USA Swimming also suspended Phelps for six months after the September arrest.
